Ich and Purigen

I've noticed an outbreak of ich on my clown loach and am going to treat it with Rid Ich+ by Kordon. Do I need to remove the Purigen in my filter first?

Re: Ich and Purigen

As a general rule of thumb, we always recommend removing any chemical filtration (Purigen, carbon) while medicating.

1) Would the above be applicable to Seachem Metronidazole and Focus mixed with food to combat gill flukes in a planted aquarium?

2) While on the subject of gill flukes on Discus in a planted aquarium, is the above Seachem Metronidazole and Focus mixed with food the most appropriate filter bed and plant safe method of treatment?

Re: Ich and Purigen

I will answer you questions as they were asked:

1. To be honest, you could probably leave your filtration in place while treating with Metronidazole, as the Focus will bind the medication to the food, reducing loss in the water column.

2. Yes; Metronidazole, Focus, and GarlicGuard would be my first recommendation for treating gill flukes in a planted tank with discus. It is completely filter safe and from my experience, plant safe.

I hope this helps! Have a great weekend!

Re: Ich and Purigen

Thank you for your reassuring reply.

Just to complicate matters slightly - last night just before lights out - I noticed a pair of discus spawned in the aquarium. While I am under no illusion regarding the raising of fry in a tank inhibited by other discus, it would be interesting - for future reference - to know the effects of Metronidazole, Focus, and GarlicGuard on discus fry.

Thank you for your valued support and you have a great weekend as well.

Re: Ich and Purigen

As long as used according to the instructions on the label, the Metronidazole, focus, and GarlicGuard should be fine to use in a tank with fry.
