Reef Nitrogen

  • Nitrogen Supplement for the Reef Aquarium
  • Provides Nitrogen in a fully testable form
  • Concentrated 25,000 mg/L Nitrogen (110,750 mg/L Nitrate)

Nitrogen is an essential element required in metabolic processes, protein synthesis, and growth of corals and macroalgae. Research suggests a tightly closed nitrogen cycle on reefs where concentrations are higher in micro-zones near the corals (Radecker 2015, Wiedenmann, 2023) than in the surrounding water.

It is important to maintain nitrogen levels along with phosphorous levels in order to allow for optimal growth and coloration of corals and macroalgae.

Supplementing with inorganic nitrogen provides a targeted means of increasing nitrogen without also adding phosphate or dissolved organics. A typical nitrate test will show all forms of nitrogen being added by Reef Nitrogen™. Reef Nitrogen™ is ideally suited for use with an aquavitro® sentia™ dose doser to maintain nitrogen at consistent concentration based on your aquarium's unique demand. Reef Nitrogen™ is easily dosed manually as well. Ideal nitrogen levels will vary but generally range from 1 – 2 mg/L (4.4 – 8.9 mg/L nitrate). Use Seachem’s Reef Phosphorous™ to achieve a balance of nitrogen to phosphorous levels for optimal results.

Sizes: 100 mL, 250 mL, 500 mL, 2 L, 4 L

Beginner

Use 1 cap (5 mL) per 160 liters (40 US gallons) twice a week or as needed to maintain desired nitrate levels. For new aquariums or aquariums with low populations of coral use ¼ to ½ dose initially and gradually increase as necessary.

Advanced

The beginner dose raises nitrogen by 0.78 mg/L or approximately 3.5 mg/L nitrate. To target a specific nitrate level, increase dose according to the following formula: 0.009vn=m where v= volume of tank in liters, n=desired nitrate increase, and m= volume of product to use in mL. For example, to raise 160 liters by 3.5 mg/L nitrate you would use 0.009*160*3.5 resulting in 5 mL to dose. For reference: 1 US gallon=3.8 L.

Considerations

Use MultiTest™ Nitrite & Nitrate to test nitrate levels.

Ideal nitrogen levels will vary but generally range from 1 – 2 mg/L (4.4 – 8.9 mg/L (ppm) nitrate). Raise levels slowly over a period of a few days. If levels are very low it may take some time to slowly bring the levels up as consumption by corals, bacteria and other life forms will pull levels down as you dose. Test regularly until a consistent regimen is able to accomplish stable desired levels. Using a sentia™ dose doser can simplify this process significantly.
